My Summit Experience – LeighAnn

My Summit Experience

By LeighAnn Clark

The Perform Better Summit this year was a great experience, as always, with so many amazing speakers and so much information. It’s hard to know where to begin. I didn’t just learn things that I could use for coaching or for programming, but I also learned things I could implement in my own life and in my own training.

I picked a ton of tips and tricks along the way. One presenter talked about how trauma to one hip can affect the opposite shoulder and vice versa. We learned how to create the trauma that could recreate this situation, but importantly we learned how to reverse it, take someone out of trauma, and reverse it to make them strong again. Magical! One of my favorites was a shoulder mobility drill. If you know me, you know I have struggled with shoulder mobility for years. I can’t sweep my arms over my head. Once my shoulders hit about 130 degrees, I get stuck and I can’t bring my hand any higher. With this one exercise alone, I was able to hit 180 degrees with both shoulders. Within minutes! I was astonished to say the least. Something I have been working to improve for years, fixed within minutes. Now that’s not to say that the problem has gone away, this is a drill I need to repeat daily, maybe even multiple times a day, so one day my shoulder mobility will far exceed where I am today.

I also picked up a ton of cool drills to use for Saturday’s and semi-private sessions. You’ll have to check them out to see what I’ve got in store for you!

One of the most important experiences, however, was Martin Rooney. He doesn’t just focus on the knowledge end of things, he teaches you how you coach and how you connect with people. He reminds you how important this job is, and how important all of you are. This topic is very important to me; one of the main reasons I love what I do is because of the people that I get to work with, and the human connections that I make. Learning how best to interact with people, and understanding how important it is to have this sense of family, not just for myself, but for every member who walks through our doors, is what it takes to be successful, but more importantly, happy. You guys are the heroes of your own story. We help you get where you need to go, but at the end of the day, you’re the one who decided to come in, you’re the one who did the work, and you’re the one who regained control of your life. We just showed you how to do it. The reality is, we all need each other. And we can never forget to let people know how much we appreciate them and how much they make us proud. And for every person who works their ass off and allows us to make them better, I believe I speak for all of us when I say we are proud of you.
