Coaching Greatness

Recently, our staff went to a Coaching Greatness seminar. Events like this are something we try to do on a fairly regular basis and this one was definitely a good one to attend. I asked the coaches what they took away from the seminar and this is what they had to say:


“As soon as I sat down for Coaching Greatness One-Day Seminar I thought to my self “I am not a coach yet”. I left the seminar taking away a lot, not only about my future as becoming a coach at A|M FItness but how I am already a “coach” in many aspects of my life, and how I can become a better coach. Everyone needs a coach, everyone needs someone in their life who will tell them that they are proud. According to Martin Rooney, there are seven actions for coaching success.

1.) Know your true north. –You need to know where you are going, and where you want to end up.
2.) Check your strategies. –Everything is a strategy, you don’t need to be smarter, you just need to have better strategies to get you to your goal.
3.) You have to ignore your “little voice”–That little voice inside your head that tells you that you aren’t able to do things.
4.) Take action.
5.) FOCUS — you can’t focus on two things at one time, you need to make the most important thing, the most important thing.
6.) Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
7.) Get your average up. Surround yourself with people who will do go for you.

My ultimate goal and vision is to become a coach, using Martin Rooney’s seven actions for coaching success, I have many things that I need to work on. I need to get a better strategy of becoming a coach. I need to ignore that little voice inside my head telling me that I can’t do it, I need to take action for myself.

The largest thing that I am taking away from this seminar is to focus and to make the most important thing, the most important thing. Life gets busy, a majority of the time I am thinking about something else while I am doing something completely different. Therefore, not all of my energy and focus is put into the thing that I am doing. I need to do better with that, I need to put all of my focus into one thing at one time to be the best that I can be. I know what I need to do to become a coach, now I need to focus all my energy on doing so. ”


“One of my biggest takeaways from this weekend’s workshop was, “You need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable”. This one is a challenge for me and I have made a promise to myself to work on this every opportunity that I have. This workshop has also reminded me why coaching is so important to me. Coaching is incredibly rewarding. Getting to know people and learning about their WHY that made them walk through the gyms front door. Then being able to work with them and challenge them enough to believe in themselves and help them reach their goals to be the best version of themselves. That gives me joy!”


Just being in his presence reminds me how much I love coaching. He never stops coaching. You put him in front of people, and he will set them on fire. He defined a coach as someone who takes someone where they want to go, that they can’t get to themselves. He reminded me of how important it is to every single person in the world, including me, to have someone who is on your side, who believes you and knows how much you have to give, and knows how to get you to give it no matter how hard it is or how scared you are of doing it. We all need someone like that, and it reminded me how blessed I am to be able to do that for someone, whether one person or every person I meet. It reminded me how much I can really be a light in someone’s life.

To paraphrase Ralph Waldo Emerson, “We all want someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be.” How could I possibly want anything else than to be that person for someone?

He said, “Don’t get good at something you don’t love.” We’re all guilty of that, myself included. Just as much as anyone else, I am figuring out where my life is going to go and what I want to do with my life. It forced me to really look at the decisions I was making, the extra jobs I was working, and ask myself, “Is this going to get me where I want to go? Is there a better way for me to get there by doing what I love and still be able to pay the bills?” Absolutely. I was putting too much time and energy into something I knew I didn’t want to do because I need to pay the bills. It forced me to really think about whether or not this was the best option. And I had a moment of clarity and I realized, that’s not the path I want to follow. I am a fitness professional; I am a coach. And I will not do anything to compromise that. This is who I am, this is why I’m here. This is not just my job, this is my life. I got my head back in the game, and I’m ready to change lives. I’m ready to focus all of my energy on what matters, but more importantly, the people that matter.


The seminar was about more than coaching, it was how to connect with people. The more a person trusts and believes you the more they will give to you, and in coaching that means effort. One of the things I really want to concentrate on to improve myself as a coach, a father, and a husband is empathy. I think I could do better at feeling with people as opposed to feeling for someone. There are some situations I am great with but I know instances with my daughter especially I have a hard time understanding what she is feeling and then I become frustrated and make the situation worse. As Martin said he could have renamed the seminar “How to be a Good Person” because that’s what it takes to get the most out of your clients.

I left with three books to read and I am working on the first. I will begin to use the steps in this book to help me become a better version of myself. Things like the nightly mirror test. While looking yourself in your eyes answer these 5 things. Did I workout or do something active today? Did I eat well today? Did I make someone’s day better today? Did I learn something new today? Did I do something to help me move closer to one of my goals today? If any answer is no then you fail and must set a plan to correct it the next day. It’s a tough and challenging test but I feel better for doing it.

The book has 52 strategies you are supposed to perfect and you work on one per week so in 1 year it is a new you.
