Why I’m Using A Coach

Why I’m Using A Coach

By Michael Harland

Usually our blogs are full of educational information for our community to use, motivational information to help lift you up, or pertinent information about our facility and programs. Today I’m going to change it up a bit and get a little more personal (hope that’s ok).

So what am I talking about? Well, I’ve recently hired a dietitian/nutrition coach for myself (www.tuttlenutrition.com) so that I could reach some goals I’ve wanted to for a while. Why? Read below for the reasons we should all have a coach for something:

1. The Knowledge – I understand nutrition, I actually have other meal plans, and I could probably have done this on my own. Instead, I chose to work with someone that has dedicated their life to this. Someone that has proven they are great at what they do and someone that I know will help me get to my goals the quickest, best way possible.

2. The meal plans are specific to me – I stated my goal, my current weight, health, likes and dislikes, and some other general criteria. This information was then used to create meal plans that were specific to me and my goals.

3. The Variables – When just starting out, we have to see what the response is from what I’m eating. Well, we noticed a quick weight drop off and a hunger level that was a bit much, so the plans were then manipulated to fix those issues. This was done within a few hours and since have proven to stave off my hunger and allow me to feel better throughout the day.

4. Accountability – For me, this was the biggest driver to work with Chris. I have a pattern of doing really well for a few days and then a shit day, rinse, recycle, repeat… Then when work gets crazy I eat what I can, when I can. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m eating fast food, but it also doesn’t mean that the foods I’m eating are portioned out and created the way they’re supposed to be. I also tend to miss meals when I get busy, which is detrimental to what I want to do.

Knowing myself, I committed to a coach because it forces me to check in every few days. There is not a chance in hell that I’m going to shoot him an email that says “the reason my weight is up is that I just smashed a large pizza, 12 wings, and washed it down with a soda”. My goal is to make every check-in 100% to the coaches plan.

Again, I’m sure I could have done this on my own, but I understand the value in working with someone that eats, sleeps, and breathes this. I love the fact that I will get to my goals faster than I would have by doing it myself and that if anything happens along the way I have someone to help keep me in check.

Now, this can go for anything. It doesn’t have to be fitness related. Coaches can help us all in some way. Want to start a business but don’t know how? Hire a business coach. Want to have a successful relationship? Hire a relationship coach. It’s important to know your strengths, but just as important to know your weaknesses, and after recognizing this to create your best success strategy (even if it means using someone else).
